An Open Letter to Indian News Media
Dear Indian Journalist, Media Reporters, Editors, Whom So Ever the Fuck it Concerned,
I am writing today to issue a plea on behalf my fellow Indians. It’s, admittedly, a move borne out of extreme anxiety and initiate from the minds of people who can’t see the light now.
We are a nation of diverse voices, opinions, religion, values, political beliefs, culture… I sure hope you know. In addition, we have many problems as people with fewer privileges, family to feed, petrol prices, interest rates, jobs, losing our friends in bomb blasts, fearing for our women, make ends meet, again a long list.
The Mass Media is often referred to as the fourth branch of government because of the power you wield and the oversight function you exercise. The media’s key role in democratic governance has been recognized since the late 17th century, and remains a fundamental principle of modern-day democratic theory and practice.
17th century, theorists had argued that exposure and openness provide the best protection against tyranny and the excesses of arbitrary rule. Thomas Jefferson, for all his bitterness against journalistic criticism celebrated the press, arguing that only through the exchange of information and opinion through the press would the truth emerge. Thus the famous Jeffersonian declaration:
Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without government, I should not hesitate to prefer the latter.
In a democratic country, like India, newspapers are the important means of forming public opinion. You comment on current events and criticise or appreciate the conduct of the Government. It is through them that the public comes to know the problems that face the country. Thus you educate the public mind and enable the people to have their own opinions on matters of public importance.
Your role in society is simple one.
- Give us facts
- Create and sustain revolutions, pleas
- Fight for what is right
- Guide us
- Amplify our problems/ voices so government can hear us
- Eventually you should be ‘Junta ki awaz’
- And become change agent
I hope we are clear yet. However, very sadly you are not doing anything at all.
What you in turn do is in reality is “pure bigoted, blasphemous and banal”.
Mumbai : You turned this incident in a bloody TRP war, where people’s live were as irrelevant as Barkha’s approach to ethical journalism.
Moral Police : Women were being physically abused and all you could do was to shoot the video so you can say “First Reported Here…”. Have you no fucking soul. What did your video do, advertised and propagated fear…Hurray a well lived day !
Raj Thackeray: This moron stand for everything I know to be wrong, and I am not alone, and what you do about it, nothing help him advance his agenda and have a debates like fucking primate morons on what he saying is right or wrong. Its wrong ask a 5 year old and they’ll tell you.
Religion : This is the funny part here, On August 25, a 29 year old Catholic nun was allegedly raped by a fanatic Hindu mob and paraded through the streets shouting Bharat mata Ki Jai- TOI, Mumbai, 4th October 2008
Free Speech : In an op-ed written over an year ago (unfortunately, due to site changes, it is inaccessible on Hindustan Times), Barkha Dutt, the managing editor of NDTV, had vented against anonymous blogger who espouse popular opinion which are ”often bigoted, blasphemous and banal.”
Now, not that I ran out of examples, its just enough to drive the point across. You have become too shallow, sleaze, sensationalist and superficial even for your own good, all I can say is people, we listen to you, so do your job properly. We don’t need you to be pimps for movies people and celebs. We don’t need your opinions, just a rational analysis, we don’t need your pointless debates and dumb followup questions. We need to you enable a democracy.
Finally all my friends when you read this please make sure at least one journalist, gets it.

Right Chirag… we must do it …
I am onto it…
And not to forget, wonderfully put !
Chirag : Thanks, Dhiren
You see, its a business. They need to Report it FIRST. That’s all there is to it. They need to puke, first, meaning access, access to politicians, access to businessmen, the police etc.
The unspoken rule: You scratch my back, I scratch yours.
In return for access, the media are expected to assist them, in cleaning their false deeds, or numbing the issue or making the other guy.. the bad guy. It is a business, a dirty business.
You think they are really interested in ‘reporting’ the issue? Bringing about a change? HELL NO! Its all about: how can we create a controversy, keep people on the edge of their seats, play with their emotions and increase our channel/newspaper/magazine ratings.
It is hard to get past these thick skin politicians. They depress me. It has been a while since I have bothered to watch the news on TV/read the papers.
Instead, I read your blog.
Chirag: True Shaaaks, me too in may ways have started reading Nita and IHM fro the latest news and editorials, Arvind and Amit, for Cricket, Movies. Frankly I have stoped relying on these media Bozoozs’ to get the entertainment of Information, Most of my facts and fun is taken from all the People I read everyday. And for a quick smile I come over to Shaaaks

Chirag: Thank Arvind
Important points, Chirag. Will do.
Chirag: Thanks Sililo
TRPs rule. As long as money can be made by selling someone’s helplessness and misery, its up for grabs. Just like the international media likes to hype up the cow on the streets of India, our channels like to hype only the negatives.
And then they like to sugarcoat it with the saying “we are putting the facts in front of you”.
Chirag: Hype the facts the safe facts benefit them.

Very well written.
The media has become too powerful, without any sense of responsibility. TRPs are all that matter for them.
The sort of sensationalistic language they use is appalling.
Chirag: Thanks AD. Yes, it all about the monies now.
You are tagged!
Chirag: Thanks, Tag taken!
Thank you! Shall send this link to as many as on my list of contacts!
Chirag: Thanks Usha.
Valid points. They themselves are responsible for the government sniffing around and trying to enforce a “code” aka censorship. And these are the same people who think that freedom of expression does not apply to ordinary people.
The new breed of TV journalists realises its importance, but does not realise its responsibilities towards the democratic system.
Quirky Indian
good one
I started laughing at one point when I saw Burkha’s reporting during the Mumbai attack … a simple secene and the way she presented it made me think that I should never watch her on air again
Chirag “17th century, theorists had argued that exposure and openness provide the best protection against tyranny and the excesses of arbitrary rule. ”
I don’t think that’s happening the way it should … responsible journalism is being sacrificed for TRPS by all the channels.
I also remember the way the Star/Zee/Aajtak covered the Aarushi case, the nauseating simulation of what they thought happened …
And you have sited so many examples!
Free media has to apply to our blogs also, absolutely no doubt about it.
I hope to see media putting pressure on Karnataka CM to punish the men who attacked those young girls, and I hope they act responsibly, and we see once again the kind of journalism that can truly become the fourth pillar of Democracy.
You have written about a sore issue. But I am not sure if anyone is evr listening to what we write. We are helpless, can only rant on our respective blogs.
Yes, Chirag, I can see many bloggers holding hands in cyberspace to fight the menaces (i had to use the plural!) together. I do hope holding hands in cyberspace is not the next subject of attack by our self-appointed moral brigade!
Media critique has always delighted me! Keep it up.
CONGRATULATIONS Chirag, indeed you have raised a topic which not is serious but at the same time alarming. I have time and again written this on orkut and even named the one and only channel that brought this unhealthy trend of journalism and it is India TV which took respite in ‘tantrik’, reptiles and astronomy. I still remember the very words of the same Rajat Sharma who promised that his channel would bring forth a new generation of news and journalism. Another thing which really bogs down is the age old ‘formula’ in reporting by the news media on Indian television “aapko kaisa lag raha hai” how do you feel. Inception by the Doordarshan still the only respite for the television reporters. Honestly, I at times feel that had it been possible they would have asked the samje question to the dead soul who committed suicide that how did it feel to have taken the plunge and being in a new state. Seeing the TRP ratings going up or in other words earning easy money a whole lot of television channels today are following the path to gain TRP ratings. In fact electronic media which is more a superfluous news media tries to reach a concussion often giving no time to research. I was shocked to hear from a renowned TV journalist of a so called reputed and ‘healthy’ channel that they are ashamed of themselves for “doing fiction in news”. indeed a shame and then they enjoy the privilege of being fourth estate. I feel that journalism is put to shame because of these journalists. if at all they deserve to called by this name. lets create a forum and fight out this menace before it put all of us in shame to be called journalists a profession which is more of a passion rather than profession. take care.

Guys, the best way to bring down these Sensational Video Bloggers (please, dont call them media – they dont deserve that honor) is to do if financially.
Look already their stock is nearly 1/6th of the peak. Just one more jhatka and its gone! and you’ll have no more of these headache folks. Try to do a short-selling of these TRP based channels and they will be on roads
